WiFi DFS Testing
HCT America LLC is currently optimizing Wireless DFS Conformity Testing procedures and capabilities, for WLAN.
In the United States the frequency bands from 5.25 to 5.35 GHz and from 5.47 to 5.725 GHz are reserved for the Department of Defense for radar applications. The demand for additional bandwidth grows constantly. To increase the available bandwidth for the unlicensed national information infrastructure (U-NII), the FCC ruled that these bands may also be used for other wireless applications, if they comply to standard FCC-06-96A1. The age of these frequency bands is of special interest for WLAN, as those bands are already used in many other countries.
The mechanism required to comply to standard FCC-06-96A1 is called Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS). The idea behind DFS is simply to switch to a different channel every time a radar device is detected on the channel currently in use. Any device which uses one of the above frequency bands must incorporate this mechanism in the future. R&S FSQ and R&S SMU equipped with pulse sequencer and DFS Analysis Tool allow a complete testing of DFS conformance.
Shown on the left, we’ve developed and fabricated the HCT America “4×4 MIMO DFS Test Fixture”. This fixture supports the interconnections between the test equipment, host computers and the Master Device under test. The circuit geometry and signal length are fixed and optimized, allowing low-loss, accurate and very repeatable measurements of IEEE / 802.11 DFS radio characteristics / operation during radar simulation. DFS Test results can be made via conducted and/or radiated methodology, depending on system requirements.
